SUWANEE - Collins Hill senior Reed Buck grew up with several of his teammates, playing with many on the same team since fifth grade.

That group had always hoped to make an impact at the high school level, and on Saturday night, the Eagles got their wish against the three-time defending Class AAAAA state champions.

Behind 29 points from Buck, Collins Hill overcame a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to shock top-ranked Norcross 67-65 in the finals of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament at North Gwinnett.

The region title was the first for Collins Hill in boys basketball and secured the top seed out the region for next week's Class AAAAA state tournament where they will host Central Gwinnett.

Norcross' loss for was its first this season to a Georgia opponent and snapped a 19-game winning streak. The Blue Devils (25-2) now will host Meadowcreek in the first round of the state tourney.

"We've been waiting to get into high school to do something special," Buck said. "I am on cloud nine right now. This is awesome."

Buck's offensive prowess helped lead the comeback with seven points in the deciding fourth quarter, but it was two huge defensive stands that proved to be the final difference.

Collins Hill (22-6) took its first lead since early in the game when Saah Nimley, who finished with 16 points, hit a pair of free throws with 16.6 seconds left to put the Eagles up 66-65.

Norcross inbounded the ball and Taariq Muhammad drove down the left side of the lane only to have Jeremy Olsen swat his shot out of bounds with 7.3 seconds remaining.

After two timeouts, Norcross again inbounded the ball, this time to Marty Johnson. Just like Muhammad, Johnson made a hard drive down the lane to the basket.

This time, Derek Hood came up with the play of the night as he not only blocked Johnson's shot but secured the loose ball. Hood was fouled and hit one of two shots (his only point of the night) to give the Eagles a 67-65 lead with 2.2 seconds left.

After Hood's second free throw, Jeremy Lamb of Norcross (25-2) heaved a desperation shot from beyond halfcourt that sailed wide, sending the Collins Hill faithful into a furious celebration.

"I know it's so cliche but we never quit," Collins Hill head coach Josh Grayson said. "We were down by more than 10 in the fourth and I can't be more proud of how we fought. It was extremely fun tonight."

Norcross led by three at the half and extended that to nine at 49-40 after the third. Their biggest lead came at 53-40 with 6:36 to play before the Eagles started to climb back.

"I think we made some key mistakes down the stretch," Norcross head coach Jesse McMillan said. "It wasn't a lack of effort but more of a mental thing. We obviously wanted to win this thing but it doesn't end our season. I hope we can bounce back and have the best week of practice we've had all year."

Muhammad finished with 16 points to lead Norcross while Lamb scored 13 points. Adrian Hubbard added 11 points, five rebounds and two blocks.

Collins Hill scraps way into 7-AAAAA finals

SUWANEE - After enduring a pair of regular season losses to Peachtree Ridge, including one in overtime on its home court, Collins Hill's boys scored some revenge on Friday night.

Trailing by as many as seven points in the third quarter and by three with just over one minute to play, Collins Hill scrapped back to force overtime and eventually top the Lions 78-71 in the semifinals of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament at North Gwinnett.

With the win, Collins Hill (21-6) will play tonight at 6 against No. 1 Norcross for the tournament crown at North Gwinnett.

"We've had three close games with (Peachtree Ridge) and it's good to be on the winning side this time," Collins Hill head coach Josh Grayson said. "It's exciting for us to play in that kind of game and come out on top because Peachtree Ridge played very well."

The Lions (19-8) looked like they were going to once again scrape another close win off the Eagles as Peachtree Ridge led 62-59 with 63 seconds to go, taking that lead off an offensive rebound and putback by C.J. Blackwell.

Collins Hill came down the court and Saah Nimley launched a 3-pointer and missed badly, but was bailed out when Daryan Griffin was whistled for a foul.

That sent Nimley to the line with 47 seconds left for three big free throws, all of which he easily drained.

"I like shooting when there's pressure on me," said Nimley, who finished with 19 points and four assists. "I like it that the coaches trust me with the ball in my hands. It was a great atmosphere tonight and I love playing in games like this."

After tying the game at 62-62, Peachtree Ridge came down the court and set up for the last shot. However, Khalid Mutakabbir was fouled with 14.3 seconds left by Kameron Phillips and went to the line for a one-and-one.

Mutakabbir couldn't connect on the front end and a fight for the loose ball ensued. A jump ball was called and Collins Hill took over with the possession arrow in its favor.

The Eagles then ran its offense and Reed Buck put up a runner from the left side but missed, sending the game into overtime.

"It's funny because Phillips is the one who said not to foul on their last possession," Grayson said. "It's real fortunate for us they missed the front end."

That stroke of luck must have stirred something in the Eagle offense in the extra stanza as Collins Hill scored on its opening possession, eventually pulling away with a 16-9 margin in last four minutes.

Nimley led that charge with six points while Buck, who finished with 18 points and six rebounds, added four more points.

"It was a good game tonight," Peachtree Ridge head coach Keith Arrington said. "We had a lead there in the third but they fought back and you have to give them credit for that. We would've loved to play for a region championship but we're still playing. We've got tomorrow and state next week so we've got that to focus on."

Collins Hill also had a big game from its center Jeremy Olsen. Olsen, a Utah signee, scored 18 points while grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds, while Herdie Lawrence chipped in with 15 points.

Blackwell scored 22 points and snared 10 boards to lead the Lions, while Mutakabbir and Rasheed Fischer each finished with 15 points. The Lions will play Mill Creek today at 2:30 p.m. at North Gwinnett for third place.

Collins Hill routs S. Forsyth 61-43

From staff reports

HOSCHTON - Up just 22-13 at halftime, the Collins Hill boys matched that point total in the third quarter alone and cruised to a 61-43 win over South Forsyth in the 7-AAAAA tournament at Mill Creek.

The Eagles (20-6) secured a spot in the state tournament and advanced into a Friday semifinal matchup with Peachtree Ridge at North Gwinnett.

Saah Nimley led the victors with 20 points, Herdie Lawrence scored 14 and Jeremy Olsen added 13. Jonathan Sawls led South Forsyth with 13 points.

"I'm just proud of the kids," Collins Hill boys coach Josh Grayson said. "They had good enthusiasm, good energy. It's always good to qualify for state because this game (to make state or end your season) is a pressure cooker."

Men's Eagles Play Tough Against Norcross
2009-01-21

NORCROSS - Not too many teams care to try to extend their defense against Norcross with an athletic and experienced backcourt led by seniors Taariq Muhammad and Denzail Jones.

Then again, Collins Hill has a few speedy guards of their own and with the host and No. 2 state-ranked Blue Devils playing in their fourth game in five nights, the opportunity was there for the Eagles to beat Norcross at its own game.
